MPs respond

Last week, we emailed all UK MPs about our campaign (bar one who refuses to correspond by e-mail!)

While most tried to fob us off with the line that "a strict parliamentary protocol that means I can only take up casework on behalf of my own constituents", a few were more constructive.

"Many thanks, most helpful."

Keith Vaz MP (Labour), former Chair of Home Affairs Select Committee

"I've read your email with interest... I don't eat meat or poultry and try very hard to eat ethically... I'm also completely opposed to the UK withdrawing from the Convention... I think you will find my colleague, who is taking the lead for our parliamentary group on this issue, very sympathetic to your persuasive arguments..."

John Nicolson MP (SNP)

"Having spoken to the Attorney General about plans for a British Bill of Rights, the government's intention is to transpose the whole convention - which would include Article 9 - into British law. This would then be enforceable through the British courts."

Mike Wood MP (Conservative)

The last of these is especially promising. The government's intention to incorporate the entirety of the European Convention on Human Rights into a British Bill Of Rights should ensure ongoing protection for vegans.

However, I'm sure we can all remember occasions when any government has changed its mind. So we need to keep the pressure on. And this is where we need you.

Unless your MP is one of those quoted above, we need you to email them so that they can't duck their responsibilities. They already have all the details, they just need you to ask them to look into the issue.

In most cases, you can email your MP by simply entering your postcode at WriteToThem.
